An investigation into the murder of Donnell Henry Hawkins in La Plata on Saturday, Dec. 31 led to the arrest of local resident Cordell Earl Spicer, 26, who was arrested and charged with first-degree murder, the Charles County Sheriff's Office announced over the holiday weekend.

The incident happened shortly after 4 p.m. on Dec. 31.

Officers from the sheriff’s office were called to the intersection of Crain Highway and Port Tobacco Road in La Plata, where there was a reported shooting. Upon arrival, investigators say that they found Hawkins, who was suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Witnesses were able to provide investigators with a description of the shooter, which led them to identify Spicer as the suspect, and he was arrested later that day without incident and charged.

Officials noted that Hawkins and Spicer “are known to each other."

Spicer is being held without bond at the Charles County Detention Center. His next court date is pending.
